When choosing a home security system you will undoubtedly be bombarded with different features that they offer and make them more special than the other choices. However, your home may not be equipped to utilize some of the features or you may not even need them. For this reason it is important to know what exactly they are selling you before you buy any particular security system.

A popular new addition to the home security system is the remote control. Many times it looks very similar to the ones that are used for car alarms and can be worn on your key ring or stowed away in your car. This remote control gives you the advantage of quickly arming or disarming the system without having to enter the passcode. If this remote is stolen then anyone who has this remote can disable your security system with ease.

You may come across something called Pet Immunity. Just as it says, it is a feature designed for your pets. You don’t want your security system triggered every time your pet enters and exits the doggy door. This add-on works by adding multiple beams to the main entranceway that must all be triggered in order for the security system to see it as an intruder. Many pet owners get this feature because it is more convenient to use this method than moving the beams higher. Sometimes moving the beams higher can result in a large gap that an intruder could potentially fit through without triggering the alarm.

If your telephone service is Voice Over Internet Protocol, then you must have some sort of backup system available. Many times the standard home security system will have a backup system that sends a cellular or radio signal to the monitoring station in the event that your phone line is cut. If you are using VoIP please make sure that it is either compatible with your security system or that there is a backup system in play.

These features are the most common types of add-ons to the home security system you will come across. Whether or not you need them is entirely up to you. There are many other system add-ons. If you do not understand why you need a certain feature, discuss it before you buy it. The worst thing you can do when purchasing a home security system is pay for a bunch of features that you don’t need.
